Newborn Basics

Newborn Feeding Schedule (Breast & Bottle)

How Often Should Noah Eat?

In the first weeks, newborns thrive on frequent, flexible feedings. Noah's tiny stomach can only hold a small amount at a time, so he naturally eats more often than older babies.

A normal schedule for a newborn is:

  • Every 2-3 hours for breastfeeding
  • Every 3-4 hours for bottle-feeding

But Noah may ask for more — and that's okay. His needs are the guide.

Signs Noah is Ready to Eat Again

Abby can trust his cues more than the clock:

  • Rooting
  • Hand-to-mouth
  • Lip smacking
  • Restless movements
  • Soft fussing

Crying is a late hunger sign—he's telling Abby, "I waited too long."

How Long Should Feedings Take?

Every baby is different, but generally:

  • Breastfeeding: 10-20 minutes per side
  • Bottle: 10-15 minutes

If Noah slows down, relaxes his hands, or falls asleep peacefully, he's probably full.

Growth Spurts Change Everything

Around weeks 1-3, babies often feed more frequently. This is normal and temporary—it helps Abby's milk supply adjust or helps Noah meet his extra growth needs.

Encouragement for Abby

Anytime Abby wonders, "is he eating enough?" she can look at Noah's diapers, alertness, and comfort. These gentle patterns tell her everything she needs to know. She's learning his rhythm exactly the way new moms do—one feeding at a time.
